Level: Suitable for complete beginners and those with basic silversmithing knowledge
Maximum Class size: 8
Whether you are a complete beginner or have done some jewellery making in the past, this course offers the opportunity to learn a range of silversmithing techniques including saw piercing, filing, texturing, forming, annealing, soldering and polishing to create your own jewellery.
We will begin the course by making a silver ring that will introduce you to the tools, materials and basic skills. You will then be able to apply what you’ve learned and build upon those techniques to design and make a matching necklace and earrings set, from solid sterling silver.
Week 1-2
- Introduction to tools, materials, and processes
- Make a silver ring
Week 3
- Saw piercing practise and introduction to the technique of sweat soldering, a fusing method that can be used to create designs by layering shapes on top of one another
Week 4-6
- Design and make your own necklace and earrings (drops or studs), using the technique learnt in week 3
All materials and tools will be provided. The classes will involve working with flames, hot metal and rotary polishing tools so participants are asked to tie long hair back, as well as wearing closed toe shoes and appropriate clothing.
